BETWEEN VENUES
A portable small exhibition — when people cannot reach the exhibition, the exhibition can reach them.

01 / ABOUT
About BETWEEN VENUES
BETWEEN VENUES does not simply record exhibitions in a book; it reimagines the book itself as a place where exhibitions happen. Carried, leafed through, opened out, displayed and rearranged, the works bring small exhibitions to places with no gallery.
Leaving museums and galleries, it brings art to hospitals, care homes, welfare facilities, libraries, schools, hotels and restaurants. For artists, it is a chance to open their work to Japanese society and culture through publishing and curation.

02 / THEME
Issue 01 theme: BESIDE
“Beside” means being close, staying near someone. Issue 01 asks what new ways of seeing and new relationships emerge when works leave their usual settings and move beside people, into everyday spaces.
We welcome works freely inspired by distance, closeness, everyday life, care, people and environment, self and others, memory and presence. Works need not deal directly with hospitals, care or social issues. Any medium — photography, painting, drawing, sculpture, installation — is welcome if it can be translated into a published exhibition through photographs, images and editing.
